Punishment

The heart begins finding ways to make the person pay.

What Can I Do Here?

Name how you may be making the person pay. Silence? Coldness? Sarcasm? Withholding affection? Gossip? Exclusion? Bringing up the failure again and again?

Ask what you really want. Are you protecting yourself from real danger, or do you want the other person to hurt because you hurt?

Choose honest action instead of hidden revenge. Speak truthfully. Set a needed boundary. Seek help or justice when needed. But do not use these things as a cover for revenge.

Romans 12:19

God tells us not to take revenge into our own hands.

1 Peter 3:9

We are not to repay evil with evil or insult with insult.

Ephesians 4:29–32

God changes both our words and our actions: away from harm and toward words and deeds that give grace.

Ask, “How am I making this person pay?” If the answer is silence, coldness, shame, or repeated humiliation, bring that response honestly before God.

Bitterness does not have to shout. Sometimes it punishes by withholding.

However deep the root, there is a way back.
