Bitterness — split tree with thorns and leaves, a biblical study on bitterness and freedom
BITTERNESS
Back to Stages
A person replaying a painful conversation in their mind

Stage 4 of 10

Rehearsal

The mind keeps replaying what happened.

What Can I Do Here?

  1. 1

Notice the replay. Catch the moment when the old conversation, betrayal, insult, or disappointment begins playing again in your mind.

  2. 2

Ask why you are replaying it. Are you remembering so you can understand, grieve, learn, and act wisely? Or are you strengthening the case against the person?

  3. 3

Turn your mind toward what is true. Do not deny what happened. But do not let the same inner argument continue without end.

Biblical Truth

Philippians 4:8

God teaches us to give our minds to what is true, right, pure, and worthy.

2 Corinthians 10:5

Our thoughts are not our masters. They are to come under Christ’s rule.

Romans 12:2

God changes us as He renews the way we think.

Put It Into Practice

When the replay starts, say plainly, “I am going over this again.” Then ask, “What truth do I need now? What should I actually do today?”

Key Thought

What the heart keeps rehearsing, it begins to believe more deeply.

A Way Forward

See where an unhealed hurt can go next.
